A routine veterinary visit brought an unexpected development for a rescued cane corso; when staff took her in to be spayed, they learned she was pregnant.
Five-year-old Kila gave birth to 14 puppies, the biggest litter the RSPCA rescue center caring for her has ever recorded, the BBC reported.

Kila arrived at the Royal Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals' Chesterfield and North Derbyshire Branch after a rescue in Doncaster on July 1 tied to welfare concerns.
Employee Chloe Gee said the staff had no idea Kila was pregnant until she showed up for a scheduled spay procedure. The record-breaking litter followed six days later.
The unexpected arrivals put pressure on the center, which was already caring for 10 puppies when Kila's litter was born.
"We'd be really grateful to anyone who can help as we nurture these gorgeous families," Gee told the BBC.

The branch was also looking after another rescued mother, Susie, a 4-year-old dog. Staff told the BBC that she had been living with 15 other dogs at a property in Barnsley and that her puppies were set to be available for rehoming last week.
Litters that large quickly increase demand for food, toys, bedding, veterinary care, and staff and volunteer time.
Both Kila and Susie were rescued before giving birth, and staff were working to provide stability as they tried to find safe, permanent homes for the puppies.

The facility asked for puppy food, toys, and other essential items to support the animals in its care and stretch shelter resources as the dogs grow and prepare for rehoming.
"It's been a really busy time, but we're so proud to have 19 beautiful, wiggly puppies who are becoming cheekier and funnier by the day," Gee said, per the BBC.
