Luau, a rescue dog with hind leg paralysis, arrived at a Jacksonville shelter unable to use her hind legs or relieve herself on her own.

After an animal services officer gave her a wheelchair, she eventually moved into a foster home equipped to care for dogs who rely on wheels.

Here's what to know

As WJAX reported, the goal was to place her in a home that could meet the daily demands of her condition.

Staff saw how determined she was, and an animal services officer responded by giving her a wheelchair so she could move around.

Because her care requires more than a standard foster placement, the rescue sought out a home already familiar with the hands-on routines that come with wheelchair use.

More background

The organization started in 2003 as Pug Rescue of Florida, a nonprofit 501(c)(3). It later expanded into Georgia, and after securing a Georgia foster-based rescue license in 2021, it became Pug Rescue of Florida & Georgia.

Rather than operating from a single shelter, the rescue relies on volunteers and foster homes. This setup helps it place dogs in households that better match their needs.

About 195 pugs and pug mixes come through the rescue each year after owners surrender them, shelters transfer them, or unsafe situations require removal.

The group's yearly bill for rescue, rehabilitation, and rehoming tops $349,000, emphasizing the importance of donating to charitable causes.

What's being done?

Luau's case involved two steps: providing equipment that restored some mobility and placing her with caregivers who already know how to manage those needs at home.

The response combined mobility support with experienced home care: an animal services officer provided the wheelchair, and the rescue then matched Luau with a foster who already knows how to care for dogs that use one.

The rescue's foster-based system makes that kind of match possible.

"Luau has everything in place to keep moving forward, and we couldn't have asked for a better next chapter for this special girl," Animal Care & Protective Services said on Facebook.

Where can I learn more?

Luau isn't the only pup to receive specialist support to ensure a happy life, and shelter dogs have also been at the center of heartwarming stories.

• In Queens, New York, a rescued pit bull made her first jump after prosthetic fitting.

• At a Virginia adoption event, a shelter dog alerted a stranger to an imminent seizure.

• In Utah, a desperate plea for a senior shelter dog led to a miracle reunion.
