North Texas' unusually long dry spell neared record territory before finally getting a little relief on Monday.

Before thunderstorms moved across North Texas on Monday evening, Dallas-Fort Worth had logged 67 straight days without measurable rain at its main gauge, as The Dallas Morning News and FOX 4 reported. It remained uncertain whether the official reading would finally move above zero.
The National Weather Service reported thunderstorms for parts of North Texas, including Grayson and Fannin counties, on Monday. NWS said the most intense hail signature was centered over Howe as the storm moved northeast at about 5 mph.
Elsewhere in the region over recent days, residents dealt with heavy rain, lightning, and gusty winds as additional thunderstorms developed. Arlington airport logged a 44 mph wind gust shortly before 5 p.m.
Flooding also became a concern in some areas. Parts of Johnson County picked up 1 to 3 inches of rain in a short period, raising concerns about quickly rising water near creeks, tributaries, and low-water crossings around the Nolan River and Buffalo Creek.

A long stretch without rain can dry out soils, strain lawns and crops, increase wildfire risk, and put added pressure on local water supplies. When storms finally arrive, hardened ground may not absorb water quickly, increasing the chance of flash flooding.

Storms can often bring relief to heat and humidity, though, on a more positive note. Forecasters expect a cooldown across the region, with highs dropping into the lower 90s after many days in the triple digits.
Motorists were told to stay off flooded roadways and to avoid driving through water covering a road to reduce the risk of injury or vehicle damage.
