Nearly 4,000 new winter coats will reach Worcester County residents as the Worcester County Sheriff's Office begins a countywide distribution effort on Oct. 19, helping families and individuals facing financial hardship prepare for colder weather.

Here's what to know

According to The Worcester Guardian, the Worcester County Sheriff's Office is moving its annual Winter Coat Drive into the delivery stage, with Sheriff Lew Evangelidis and staff scheduled to deliver new coats to food pantries, nonprofit groups, community centers, and other local agencies across the county.

As temperatures drop, the coats are meant to help residents who may not be able to buy winter gear on their own, while also giving local service organizations more resources to help.

Community groups that already help residents meet basic needs are handling distribution.

The Sheriff's Office coordinates each year's drive with the Worcester County Reserve Deputy Sheriff's Association. In a statement, Evangelidis said, "Every year, we are reminded of just how much of a difference something as simple as a warm winter coat can make."

Evangelidis added that "This initiative is about more than providing coats. It's about bringing people together, supporting our neighbors, and showing those in need that their community cares."

More background

To get the coats to the right places, the Sheriff's Office is working through agencies that regularly serve residents experiencing financial hardship.

A new coat may seem simple, but for families balancing rent, food, and utility costs, outerwear for adults and children can be a significant expense.

Over time, the coat drive has become a regular part of the Sheriff's Office's community outreach, drawing in businesses, volunteers, and social service organizations to help distribute winter clothing throughout Worcester County.

The Sheriff's Office plans several stops around Worcester County, including nonprofit programs and food assistance sites residents may already use for support.

What's being done?

On Oct. 19, the Sheriff's Office will begin delivering coats to agencies across Worcester County so those organizations can get them directly to residents.

The effort depends on donations and sponsorships from businesses, organizations, and individuals. Supporters include Saint Francis Community Health Foundation and Mercadante Funeral Home; the Cliff & Susan Rucker Foundation and CareOne at Millbury; plus The Overlook, Diamond Auto Group, and Imperial Cars, along with Rockland Trust Bank and Beacon Bank, as well as the Worcester Red Sox, plus NEPBA Local 550 Worcester County Correction Officers.

By supplying new coats, the drive provides ready-to-wear items that local organizations can distribute immediately as colder weather arrives.

It also helps ease pressure on food pantries, nonprofits, and community centers that may not have the resources to buy winter gear on their own.

Residents are expected to receive coats through the partner organizations receiving the deliveries, as the county is relying on established service providers across Worcester County.

Evangelidis said, "We are incredibly grateful to our sponsors and community partners who make this effort possible year after year."
