After years of resisting, a disabled Army veteran in the Midwest said their father may finally be warming up to the idea of home solar. For advice on how best to integrate their father's existing home battery into a new solar system, the vet turned to Reddit.

Here's what to know

In a Reddit thread on r/SolarDIY, the original poster described how their father was still opposed to switching to an electric vehicle but had recently changed his tune on home solar.

Explaining that their father already owned an Anker Solix unit for backup power, the original poster asked Redditors for advice on everything from panels to battery expansion to whether a bigger system would make more sense on the roof or in the backyard.

One commenter quickly pointed out an error in the OP's description: their father owned an "Anker Solix F3200."

"Double check what unit you guys have… I don't believe there's an F3200," said the commenter. "There's an F3000 that's solely 120v unless you get 2 of them and the F3800 which is split phase 120/240."

The distinction mattered because it involved much more than model numbers. A unit's voltage determines which home loads it can support in a backup scenario. The same commenter recommended a Reliance 50A transfer switch and warned that "you can not tie into any 240v circuits if you don't have a 240v generator/inverter."

Going solar is one of the best ways to save money on home energy while also adding resilience during outages. Homeowners who want to see what a professionally installed system might cost can try EnergySage to get free solar installation estimates and compare quotes.

More background

As the OP considered the best way to go solar, they were weighing several constraints at once: limited roof conditions, tree shade, a wet backyard, and a father who prefers "easy plug n play systems as much as possible."

Before spending more money, commenters recommended that the family verify exactly which Anker unit they have and then align its capabilities with the circuits they want to back up. This process is especially important if the plan includes 240-volt equipment, such as some air-conditioning loads.
