Illinois residents who qualify for utility assistance could get some relief next month before winter heating bills start to rise, according to WCSJ News.
Here's what to know
In Kendall and Grundy counties, Illinois, LIHEAP — the Low Income Home Energy Assistance Program — will first open on Oct. 1 to seniors, people with disabilities, families with children younger than 5, and households dealing with utility disconnection, WCSJ News reported.
The general public can apply beginning Nov. 1. For approved applicants, the program places a single payment toward a gas or electric bill.
Kendall-Grundy Community Action's Melissa Kreamer said some residents who qualify can also receive monthly utility discounts. Certain households may be eligible for extra assistance related to solar programs or emergency furnace help for homeowners.
A family of four must have made less than $6,617 in the 30 days before applying to qualify. On an annual scale, this would likely translate to just over $74,400 a year.

The program also prioritizes residents who may be especially vulnerable to losing heat or electricity.
Kreamer said a separate program also starts Oct. 1 for Grundy County residents who receive SNAP benefits and need support with employment barriers. According to WCSJ News, that help can cover job training, clothing, childcare, rent, and necessary vehicle repairs.

Kreamer stated that residents can call (630) 553-8051 to arrange an appointment to apply.
"We can do phone appointments or in person appointments. What this program does is it will put a one time payment towards your gas and electric bill for the year," Kreamer said.
In-person appointments in Grundy County are available at We Care from Monday through Wednesday and at Minooka Village Hall on Thursdays.
