A homeowner considering a Honda EU2200i generator paired with a roughly 2-kilowatt-hour battery got a reality check from people using similar backup setups.
In a Reddit thread, the homeowner said they were looking for a system that could power two or three fridges and freezers, prompting several commenters to warn that their planned capacity might fall short.
Here's what to know
On Reddit's r/generator, the original poster explained that they planned to use the generator mainly to recharge the battery. They also said they would prefer a battery that leaves room for possible solar and extra capacity down the road.
However, most comments focused on whether the OP's planned capacity would be sufficient for their planned load. One commenter said that they owned an EU2000i generator paired with an Anker S2000, which they bought to power their 2005 refrigerator during outages.
"In my testing during the summer (warmer ambient temperatures), it ran our fridge for 21 hours," the commenter wrote. "If you're talking about multiple fridges/freezers, I think 2kWh is definitely not going to last you longer than a day," they added, estimating that the OP's proposed setup would last for about 12 hours.
The benefits of pairing a generator with a home battery
Capacity concerns aside, the original poster explained that the attraction of pairing a generator with a home battery was cutting down on generator run time.
"I don't want to have to live next to my generator constantly using it," they explained. "I was hoping that I could be in a situation where I use the generator to charge up the battery 0-100% in a few hours (or however long it takes) and then the battery will power the freezers/fridges and some small devices like power tool cordless, phones etc for maybe 1-2 days and recharge."
While it seemed from the comment that the OP would need a larger-capacity setup to accomplish those goals, commenters liked the idea of pairing a fuel-powered generator with a home battery. That way, the battery can handle overnight use, reducing noise, avoiding nonstop generator use, and making it easier to power phones, tools, and other essentials indoors while the generator stays outside.
However, commenters advised that, in this hybrid approach, the battery's specs can matter as much as the generator's. One commenter shared that their Anker S2000 draws only about four to six watts at idle on AC, compared with roughly 12 to 15 watts for some other models, which they said matters when refrigerator loads cycle on and off. They also noted that the same unit is capped at 1,500 watts of output and 400 watts of solar input.
