The catch is that demand is expected to exceed the available funding.

In Corpus Christi, Texas, a lottery could provide relief for homeowners with urgent repair needs.

The catch is that demand is expected to exceed the available funding.

Here's what to know

Through Corpus Christi's Minor Home Repair Program, 38 qualifying homeowners may receive grants of up to $24,999 for work tied to health, safety, and habitability, KRIS 6 News reported. Applications will be accepted from Oct. 13 to Oct. 27.

To be considered, homeowners must show that they have at least one critical repair need. Covered work includes roofing, plumbing and electrical fixes, heating and air conditioning systems, minor structural repairs, and accessibility modifications.

The program is limited to homeowners who meet one of several criteria: they are 62 or older, they are a veteran or the surviving spouse of a veteran, or they or someone in their household has a disability.

Awards will not be made on a first-come, first-served basis. Because the city expects requests to outpace available funding, eligible applications will go into a lottery.

What's being done?

Residents can get help completing forms in English or Spanish at La Retama Central Library, 805 Comanche St., from staff with Corpus Christi's Planning and Economic Development Department. Assistance will be available Tuesday through Friday from 10 a.m. to 6 p.m. and Saturday and Sunday from 1 to 5 p.m.

Applicants should bring a valid photo ID and the most recent income documentation for every adult in the household. Acceptable records include pay stubs, Social Security award letters, veterans' benefits information, and retirement income statements.

Funding comes from the U.S. Department of Housing and Urban Development through its Community Development Block Grant program.

Applicants must show at least one critical repair, gather identification and income paperwork for every adult in the household, and submit an application through the city's program page at cctx.info/CCMHRP before the Oct. 27 deadline.
