Greece is putting more than €21.5 million in additional public funding toward helping households replace old water heaters, aiming to reduce the energy used for an everyday necessity: hot water.

Here's what to know

A further 6,000 households have received approval from the Ministry of Environment and Energy for its "I Change Water Heater" program, according to TOVIMA.COM, as cited by BRG Building Solutions.

Lower energy use at home is one goal; another is a shift toward hot water systems that are better for the environment.

Heat pump water heaters offer one way to cut that energy use. Instead of relying solely on electricity to generate heat, these systems transfer heat from elsewhere to warm the water. That efficiency can help households lower their operating costs.

Official registries list the suppliers and products available to participants preparing to install replacements after their applications are approved.

What's being done?

Before choosing equipment, beneficiaries can check how their applications are progressing on the digital platform for "I Change Water Heater," according to TOVIMA.COM.

For households exploring efficient water heating, Cala offers configurable smart heat pump water heaters. Matching water heating schedules to a household's demand can help reduce unnecessary energy use while keeping hot water available when it is needed. That scheduling approach can also help lower bills by making the timing of water heating part of the savings strategy. Cala brings those controls together with heat pump technology.

With the additional 6,000 household approvals, Greece's "I Change Water Heater" program counts over 146,000 successful applications, TOVIMA.COM said.
