Homeowner hesitant about Predator inverter for home backup setup: 'The industry worst standard warranty'

As the conversation unfolded, the real issue became whether saving money up front was worth it.

A prospective generator buyer took to Reddit to decide whether a quiet inverter unit made sense for outage backup, especially for its asking price.

As the conversation unfolded, the real issue became whether saving money up front was worth it if warranty coverage and replacement parts proved weak.

Here's what to know

The debate started in a Reddit thread on r/Generator, where someone shared they were planning a more built-out home backup setup.

"Just didn't know if should go another route for the price," they wrote. Since the installation side seemed mostly mapped out, many replies focused on ownership value rather than setup.

One commenter said that while it seemed to be a popular brand, they "would personally not purchase one" because the brand has "the industry worst standard warranty at 90 days unless you buy their overpriced one or two year exchange plan."

They also argued that parts access matters nearly as much as the warranty itself, writing that the company is "about the worst for keeping parts in stock for their own Generators as they mainly consider them disposable." As alternatives, they pointed to WEN and Duromax models with a "minimum 3 year standard warranty."

More background

The discussion brought up several factors that do not always show up in conversations, including noise, fuel options, repairability, and the consequences of a breakdown during a power outage.

Price came up repeatedly, but often as a reason to look deeper. One commenter wrote, "If you buy Predator, you are buying based on price, not reliability, service options or warranty."

Other commenters said the units can still be a reasonable fit if buyers keep their expectations in check.

What can be done?

For anyone shopping for portable generators, the advice in the thread was to compare more than just the base price and not limit the search to one brand.

Champion, Firman, WEN, and Duromax were all mentioned, with several commenters highlighting longer warranties or better customer service.

Fuel choice also came up as a practical way to narrow the field. One commenter recommended "a tri-fuel unit that can run on propane because propane never goes bad."

Where can I learn more?

These stories look at the same backup-power questions that came up in the generator debate above. They cover generator noise, what to weigh when shopping for outage backup, and battery-based alternatives that can change the price-versus-reliability tradeoff.

• Homeowners weighing bargain generators kept running into noise, airflow, and warranty risk at once.

• After three days without power, one homeowner started shopping for a portable propane generator.

• Energy experts argued a generator will never give the resilience of backup solar.

• Anker's latest backup gear looked ready for outages at home, challenging Tesla's Powerwall.

• New portable battery systems showed startling capabilities during outages, expanding options beyond fuel-powered backup.
