A generator left untouched for five years usually ends up with a dead battery and a frustrating no-start.
Instead, one owner said a Champion 4250-watt open-frame inverter generator came back to life with little more than fresh fuel and an oil change — the kind of result that could help someone avoid a costly repair scramble during a power outage.
Here's what to know
The owner wrote in a Reddit post that the Champion unit was bought in 2021, run briefly for break-in, and then stored for five years with a small amount of Stabil-treated, ethanol-free gas left in the tank.
The original poster said the machine resumed normal operation after basic service: an oil change, removing the old fuel, and adding fresh ethanol-free gas. It then "started right up and delivered power with no problems at all."
The surprise was not limited to the engine starting. The owner added, "Not even a dead battery."
Commenters largely focused on the fuel system. One wrote, "The fact that you used ethanol free fuel was the trick." Another shared, "Store all your equipment dry and you'll never have problems with fuel related issues."
More background
A separate commenter contrasted that result with a neighbor's experience, saying the generator was stored with gasoline in it and "didnt drain it and (surprise) it didnt work when needed." After the carb and tank were drained and fresh fuel was added, it "fired on the first pull."
One Reddit user noted that a generator can stop running before every trace of fuel is gone. That remaining fuel is where buildup can develop during long storage periods.
Several Redditors also described maintenance routines focused on testing readiness, not just owning the machine.
Battery preparation came up too: one commenter said they keep a battery maintainer wired directly to the generator, while another prefers keeping a car jump starter charged and ready.
What can be done?
After the successful restart, the OP wrote, "I'll be taking better care of it running it once a month from now on, but pretty surprised all I had to do was change fluids and give it a pull."
A few Redditors also stressed the importance of testing the generator under real conditions.
One commenter said they run theirs every few months for around 20 minutes and hook it up to the house to confirm the entire setup still works. Another described a routine of five minutes unloaded, 10 minutes on a 1,500-watt heater, and then five more minutes with no load.
