A Florida neighborhood is weighing an uncomfortable tradeoff: how to fix dangerous sidewalks without losing the trees that helped define the community.
Brevard County concluded that tree roots had warped neighborhood walkways into an accessibility and safety hazard, so 62 mature trees came down in Hammock Trace in Viera. The move turned once-shaded streets into rows of stumps.
Here's what to know
For residents, the change is immediate and visible. Gary Colonna, a Hammock Trace resident, told News 6 ClickOrlando: "The neighborhood looks terrible now."
He said the oaks were a big part of why people wanted to live there. "So many people were attracted to this neighborhood just because of those trees," he said.
According to county officials, the issue developed over time as the trees grew and their roots pushed up the pavement. Don Walker, the county's government communications director, said: "Over the years, as those trees have matured, the root systems have started buckling some of the sidewalks."
Uneven sidewalks can create accessibility problems for people walking, pushing strollers, or using mobility devices.

Colonna said the impact is already noticeable inside his home. "The inside of our home — it used to be kept cooler. You could feel the difference. You could feel the difference without our tree," he said.

What's being done?
Walker said county officials did not arrive at the decision casually and that they consulted an arborist while considering other options before removing the trees, saying: "We don't just arbitrarily go through neighborhoods and chop down trees."
The county also said it told the homeowners association it could take responsibility for issues related to the trees, according to News 6 ClickOrlando.
Even so, officials moved forward with the removal, with Walker saying: "Those sidewalks have to be safe for everybody."
Crews are still removing stumps and debris, and sidewalk repair work is expected to begin next year.
