For households in the Florida Keys, one of the biggest questions may be how long they have to endure high energy bills.

In response, the local utility, Keys Energy Services, reopened a rebate program that can reduce the upfront cost of several home efficiency upgrades and home electrification projects.

Here's what to know

A limited round of Keys Energy Services rebates is available again for customers buying eligible energy-efficient equipment and EV charging hardware. The program's funding is capped, so rebates are being awarded on a first-come, first-served basis.

"Replacing old, energy-hogging appliances can create major savings on monthly energy bills, but investments in energy efficient appliances, while cost-effective in the long run, may not be affordable in the short term," the utility explained on its website. "To help customers invest in energy efficient appliances and equipment, KEYS offers rebates for qualified, energy-efficient products."

That means customers who have been putting off a new appliance, a cooling upgrade, or an EV charger may now have a chance to lower both purchase costs and future utility bills. According to Keys Weekly, the program includes 14 separate rebates for qualifying customers.

For EV owners, the charger rebate is the biggest standard incentive at $350, and Energy Star-certified models can qualify for another $50.

Beyond that, the utility offers rebates across a mix of home improvements: $450 for a solar water heater; $250 for a central air-conditioning unit; $175 for a ductless AC unit; $150 for duct leak repairs or replacements; $100 for a clothes washer; $75 each for a room AC or refrigerator; $55 for a dishwasher; $50 for a dehumidifier; and $25 each for a hot water heater timer, programmable thermostat, ceiling fan, or white roof coating.

Keys Energy Services said it has provided over $1.4 million in customer rebates since 2008, per Keys Weekly. The utility also noted customers may receive more than one rebate within the designated timeframe.
