A leak soaked an electric water heater, but hot showers only last 2 minutes after repairs

One homeowner faced a leak that soaked her electric water heater, and after paying for pipe repairs, hot showers lasted only about two minutes.

Here's what to know

In a Reddit post, the new homeowner said the trouble started when the hot water suddenly disappeared. After going downstairs to investigate, they found water "pouring from the ceiling" near the electric water heater and shut off the breaker. A plumber later replaced "a whole section of the pipes leading to the water heater."

Once that work was done, they flipped the breaker back on and believed the unit had started working again, but the fix did not restore normal service. Instead, the family was still getting only "a couple of mins" of hot water at a time.

"Could be piped in backwards or a dead element if it's electric," one commenter suggested.

Another wrote, "Depending on the age of the water heater, the bottom element or thermostat could've gone bad." They added that the heater might still be repairable if the unit itself was not leaking.

While this homeowner hoped to avoid major repair or replacement costs, those dealing with electric tank trouble can sharply reduce energy costs by upgrading to a heat pump water heater.

According to Energy Star, a family of four can save about $550 a year on electricity compared with a standard electric model.

More background

At first, the householder assumed the tank simply needed more time. According to the Reddit post, they asked everyone in the house not to use hot water for nearly 24 hours while waiting for it to refill and heat back up.

They were especially annoyed that the plumber who fixed the leaking pipes would not examine the heater problem. The homeowner said the crew told them they "don't do anything with hot water heaters because they can't be liable if there's a warranty and if one thing goes wrong it could break another."

One person wrote, "All they gotta do is use a multimeter on the thermostats and elements," while another questioned whether the tank had fully refilled and if restoring power too soon might have "dry-fired" it.

None of those diagnoses were confirmed in the thread, and the household was still dealing with a second problem after the plumbing emergency.

What can be done?

Commenters said the next step should be diagnosis, not more guessing. One recommendation was to have a plumber test the elements and thermostats; another was to make sure the tank had completely refilled and that any trapped air was gone before the power was turned back on.

For homeowners whose aging electric tank needs replacement instead of another repair, Cala is a great place to start. Cala's customizable smart heat pump water heaters can help homeowners decrease their energy bills by heating water exactly when it is needed.

That kind of control could be especially helpful for families juggling showers, dishes, and laundry on a tight schedule. Comparing another service call with options from Cala can also help homeowners weigh long-term operating costs against one more short-term fix.
