Firefighters in Spokane Valley, Washington, rescued a dog from a burning car, finding the animal alive in the rear of the vehicle despite melted whiskers and signs of smoke inhalation.

With emergency oxygen from Engine 7, the pup improved enough to get back on his feet and reunite with his owner.

Here's what to know

According to KXLY, Spokane Valley firefighters arrived at a car fire and learned a dog was still inside the flame-engulfed vehicle.

The owner and two friends had been shopping at a nearby grocery store and did not know the animal was trapped.

KXLY reported that the dog had retreated to the back of the vehicle as it tried to escape the heat and smoke. Engine 7 crews found him there after beating back the fire.

By the time responders reached the dog, his whiskers had melted, and he was showing signs of smoke inhalation.

Firefighters gave the dog oxygen and kept a close watch on him as he slowly began to recover.

What's being done?

Before they could reach the dog, Engine 7 firefighters worked to control the fire and make the back of the vehicle accessible. Once they located the animal, their response shifted to medical care.

Firefighters removed the dog from the vehicle and started oxygen treatment while monitoring his condition. They stayed with him as time and oxygen helped him recover.

After the ordeal had ended, Engine 7 firefighters said: "That's why we do what we do."

Where can I learn more?
