A ripped dining chair could have turned into an expensive reupholstery project — or an excuse to buy a whole new set. Instead, one frugal Redditor found a $5 fix that made all four chairs look polished enough that people assumed they were store-bought.
By repurposing a discontinued curtain sample book, the original poster pulled off a budget makeover while also keeping perfectly usable fabric out of the trash.
What happened?
A trip to a nearby curtain shop led to the solution. The poster explained the situation in the r/Frugal subreddit.
According to the original poster, one of their dining chairs ripped, and when looking for upholstery fabric to make repairs, they found every pattern they liked was "weirdly expensive."
Looking for a more affordable solution, the original poster took to a local curtain shop to ask if they sold any scrap fabrics. The owner then showed them sample books for patterns the store had discontinued.
The dimensions turned out to be ideal for the project: many of the swatches were "almost the exact size of a chair seat." After buying the full sample book for $5, the poster chose four patterns in similar colors and attached them over the existing fabric.

Unfortunately, the poster did not share an image or two of the final product, and in their words, "the chairs don't match perfectly now," but they said the result "looks intentional enough that two people have asked where I bought the set."
