Pet owner's $24 cat litter bill draws a cheaper suggestion: 40 pounds of pine pellets for $6

A Reddit request for help lowering monthly pet expenses drew a lively response after one user detailed the usual costs of caring for three cats and one senior dog.

Most of the discussion settled on one expense: litter. At $23.98 for a 40-pound box, that item stood out to users, many of whom pointed to pine pellets as a far cheaper substitute.

Here's what to know

The Reddit post came from a household with three cats and a large older dog that is "allergic/sensitive to chicken and chicken byproducts." Their usual purchases were listed as $34.84 for a 16-pound bag of Purina ONE cat food, $23.98 for 40 pounds of Tidy Cats litter, $58.99 for a 28-pound bag of Taste of the Wild dog food, and $6.28 for dog treats.

Before users weighed in, the OP had already identified one area they might change. They said, "I'm not opposed to DIY things by any means" and said they were looking into pine pellets and a sifting stainless steel litter box.

Replies backed that idea with specific prices. One said, "Tractor Supply sells 40 pound bags of pine pellets for $6." Another said they buy a 40-pound bag of horse bedding pellets for less than $10.

People were far more reluctant to suggest cutting the food budget, especially because the dog's diet is more limited.

One user said, "Don't cut costs on food. Lower quality food can result in higher vet bills."

More background

The challenge was not only cost. The OP said one cat is unusually large, making it hard to find a litter box big enough for him, though the vet said he is "a little overweight" but "pretty proportional" for his length.

Beyond pellets, users suggested cheaper litter brands. One recommended Walmart's Special Kitty. They said a 48-pound bag costs about $12, while another said a 20-pound jug runs about $8-9 at their local store.

Because of the dog's chicken sensitivity, suggestions for switching food were narrower. One user said, "Some of Costco's dog foods (like Salmon & Sweet Potato) appear to be chicken-free and are much cheaper than Purina One."

Space and household setup also affected the advice people gave. One user asked whether the poster had room to stock up on litter during Black Friday sales, while another suggested converting a large storage bin into an oversized litter box.

What can be done?

Much of the advice focused on trimming smaller expenses before making any major changes to the food itself.

Multiple users recommended using Purina's app to upload receipts and redeem points for coupons on the brand's products. Others suggested pairing that with retailer discounts.

One user said they use Chewy autoship for "a small discount for the subscribe and save thing," while another recommended contacting manufacturers directly and asking for coupons, even if "a coupon is still a coupon."

Users also flagged one note of caution about pellet choice. A user warned shoppers to choose a bag intended for cat use and added, "You need kiln dried pellets to remove the toxins."
