Homeowner faces $4,000 AC repair after unregistered unit's warranty expires

A homeowner faces a repair bill of up to $4,000 after their six-year-old air conditioner stopped working, and they discovered the equipment was never registered for extended warranty coverage.

Here's what to know

The account, posted in Reddit's r/hvacadvice community, concerns a 3-ton air conditioner. The equipment was installed in 2020 as part of the home's construction.

Two technicians and a separate HVAC company reached the same conclusion: The compressor had shorted to ground. The initial technician also found a tripped breaker while inspecting the system during a maintenance visit.

With more estimates still to come, the homeowner had not settled on a repair or replacement. According to the Reddit post, a new 3-ton Trane setup — including the outdoor unit and indoor coil — was quoted at roughly $8,000, while compressor-replacement estimates ranged from $3,000 to $4,000.

"I'm pretty torn on what to do. Six years just seems way too early to replace an entire AC system, especially when we had zero issues with it before this happened. But I'm also hesitant to throw $3,000–$4,000 at a compressor when nobody really knows what caused it to fail in the first place," the homeowner wrote.

More background

By the time the compressor failed, the unit's only coverage — a standard five-year parts warranty — had already expired.

Even with outdoor temperatures of 85 to 90 degrees Fahrenheit, the homeowner reported indoor temperatures of 68 to 72 degrees Fahrenheit. Until the breakdown, the system had kept the roughly 2,200-square-foot South Carolina home comfortable.

Both HVAC companies had raised concerns about possible additional problems, the homeowner explained in a reply. The condition of the remaining components was another worry beyond the immediate repair expense.

Paying for a new compressor might not end the expense, the homeowner said. They worried that a problem with the evaporator coil or metering device could damage the replacement and lead to another substantial bill.

What can be done?

Homeowners can check manufacturer registration and warranty coverage when equipment is installed, or when a property changes hands. One commenter also suggested asking about labor-warranty costs.

Equipment sizing, rather than simply matching the old unit's 3-ton capacity, was another consideration raised in the comments. A commenter recommended a heating-and-cooling load calculation before replacement, and the homeowner agreed to discuss it with the contractor.

For homeowners comparing upfront and ongoing expenses, Palmetto's Comfort Plan offers $0-down options, states potential heating-and-cooling cost reductions of up to 50%, and includes 12 years of free maintenance — relevant considerations for someone facing both replacement costs and maintenance uncertainty.

Pairing solar with efficient electric HVAC can further help manage utility spending and make a home more self-reliant. EasyHome offers a solar comparison-shopping tool to help homeowners compare installation offers and make sure they get the best deal.
