UK bungalow owner gets $9,300 boiler quote over 2-minute hot water wait; plumbers say move it

"Any option with a secondary turn combi or unvented and you are going to lose efficiency."

A costly boiler proposal prompted a wider question for a bungalow owner in the U.K.

They were pondering whether a £7,000 (~$9,270 USD) upgrade was the answer, or if the real problem was that the hot-water source was simply too far from the bathrooms. As it stood, reaching hot water currently takes almost two minutes in their home.

Here's what to know

In a thread on Reddit, the homeowner asked the r/askaplumberUK subreddit whether a quote for a replacement system was too high. They explained that their failing Vaillant combi sits in a corner of the garage, while the bathrooms are on the far side of their unusually wide bungalow.

"As a result it can take almost 2 mins for the hot water to reach the taps," the original poster wrote, adding that they had been quoted "over £7000 for a viesmann 111-W, secondary return system etc." and asking, "Sounds steep?"

For homeowners already planning to replace aging equipment, a heat pump water heater can also be worth pricing out. When a quote climbs into the thousands, operating costs can matter almost as much as the installation price.

More background

The farther hot water has to travel, the more cooled water has to be pushed out of the pipes before warm water reaches the tap. That can mean longer waits, more wasted water, and more heat lost through the pipework between uses.

Secondary return systems can improve convenience by keeping hot water moving, but as commenters noted, they can also come with efficiency drawbacks.

Several replies argued that the proposal seemed to focus on the delay rather than the layout creating it. One commenter warned that "any option with a secondary turn combi or unvented and you are going to lose efficiency.

Save $10,000 on solar panels without even sharing your phone number

Want to go solar but not sure who to trust? EnergySage has your back with free and transparent quotes from fully vetted providers in your area.

To get started, just answer a few questions about your home — no phone number required. Within a day or two, EnergySage will email you the best options for your needs, and their expert advisers can help you compare quotes and pick a winner.

Solar panels can save you more than $50k over their 25-year lifespan, and EnergySage can help you save as much as $10k on installation. Which begs the question — isn't that worth an email or two?

"Best solution would be an unvented and system boiler set up with priority hot water," they wrote. "The second best option would then be the storage combi."

A separate commenter who said they were a former tradesman thought moving the unit might be the simpler answer: "I think [you're] being upsold and for that money I'd just move the combi as it'd be cheaper than all of that mess he's quoted imo."

Another person suggested reworking the distribution side with a hot-water manifold and smaller 0.39-inch (10mm) feeds, estimating that "assuming your hot water is 15mm that 2 minute wait would reduce to 40 seconds using 10mm."

What's being done

Some commenters pointed to the value of future-proofing instead of simply replacing one setup with a similar one.

"Cylinder is a good option as if you get solar you can use it in the immersion," one wrote, while pointing to a system that could pair more easily with other home energy upgrades down the line.

Cala is one company offering smart heat pump water heaters for homeowners looking for more control over energy use. Its customizable smart heat pump water heaters help homeowners decrease their energy bills by heating water exactly when it's needed.

That could be especially useful in homes where layout already makes hot-water delivery inefficient, because better scheduling and smarter heating can reduce waste. Before approving a large plumbing bill, it may be worth comparing relocation and repiping quotes against a high-efficiency option such as Cala.
