A homeowner's complaint about a nearly new heat pump water heater drew attention after the unit started spitting brown water and "leaking from the seams everywhere."
While heat pump water heaters can cut electricity use, installation details are important if homeowners want those savings without expensive headaches.

The issue surfaced in a Reddit thread about a Bradford White AeroTherm water heater that was just 2-3 years old.
"Yesterday our hot water turned brown, started sputtering, and I found the heater like this," the homeowner wrote.


Before asking whether the failure might be covered under warranty, the poster said they had drained the tank and found "no sediment other than a little rusty water." They added that they couldn't inspect the anode rod because they were unable to get the top open.
Replies centered on two questions: what caused the breakdown and whether the unit might qualify for warranty coverage.
"Regarding the warranty — are you the original purchaser, and what's the serial number for the unit?" one commenter asked.
Another user pointed to the plumbing, writing: "It's dead and it caused electrolysis. You need to have at least a 6-inch brass nipple in between copper and galvanized."

When metals such as copper and galvanized steel are connected improperly, galvanic corrosion — often loosely called electrolysis — can eat away at fittings and tank components. If that is what happened here, the root cause may have been the installation, not the heat pump itself.
Heat pump water heaters are one of the most promising home electrification upgrades for cutting utility bills and pollution. They work by moving heat rather than generating it directly, making them far more efficient than conventional electric tanks.
