Alabama resident says loft AC runs nonstop, learns that their windows create a 'greenhouse' effect

"Evidently they have struggled greatly to rent this unit due to the heat and sun position."

An Alabama resident said their AC was "running constantly" in a 1,600-square-foot loft with five large windows, highlighting a common problem in sun-soaked homes. Expansive views might look great, but they can also mean more heat, more noise, and higher cooling bills.

Here's what to know

Much of the discussion in the r/hvacadvice subreddit focused on how much heat the loft's windows could be letting in. The original poster said the thermostat was set to 74 degrees, but the system stayed on through much of the day and was "pretty loud."

To cut down on that heat, commenters suggested blackout curtains, reflective or light-colored shades, and ceramic window tint to reduce sunlight without fully giving up the view.

"The windows provide an amazing view but are turning your loft into a greenhouse," one commenter wrote.

Another suggested the loft may have other efficiency problems, writing: "Looks like single pane windows, no insulation, blinds just looks like a screen. No wonder your AC is always running!"

More background

If an AC is constantly battling solar heat gain, it may run longer, use more electricity, and still leave the space less comfortable. One commenter noted that if the system is still holding the set temperature, nonstop operation does not necessarily mean it is broken.

"If the AC is pumping out cold air, and the space temp is being held, it just has to run," the commenter wrote. "You can set a higher temp and it'll cycle more."

To make the noise feel less intense, the same commenter pointed to the room itself rather than the unit, saying rugs, curtains, and other soft surfaces can absorb sound.

Another commenter added that some systems are designed to run for long stretches at low speed, especially to control humidity. In a hot, humid climate such as Alabama, that can be part of normal performance.

What can be done?

In an update, the original poster revealed they sidestepped the problem by speaking to the landlord and getting permission to move to a unit on the other side of the building.

"Evidently they have struggled greatly to rent this unit due to the heat and sun position and have only had two occupants in it since 2019," they wrote.

If you're not as lucky as the OP, Palmetto's Comfort Plan network includes $0-down options that can lower your heating and cooling costs by up to 50%, and Palmetto Comfort Plans include 12 years of free maintenance.
