Major home-energy upgrades can lower utility bills for years, but upfront costs often keep homeowners from following through.

In the United Kingdom, Zopa and Hive are trying to ease that burden by bringing regulated financing directly into the checkout process for heat pumps and other clean-energy equipment.

Here's what to know

TechTimes reported that Hive has added Zopa's FCA-regulated financing to its checkout, so eligible UK homeowners can stay on the site while arranging fixed monthly payments for products including heat pumps, EV chargers, smart thermostats, and solar equipment.

The timing matters as well. In July 2026, the United Kingdom's new rules for buy now, pay later credit took effect, adding stricter requirements around affordability and disclosures in a fast-growing market. Zopa was already operating under that kind of oversight because it has a full UK banking license.

The Boiler Upgrade Scheme provides up to £7,500 (~$10,193 USD) in grant support for installing a heat pump, and the program has been confirmed through March 2030. Even with that support, though, many households still have to cover thousands of pounds out of pocket.

Turning a large upfront expense into predictable monthly payments may make these projects easier to manage, especially since upgrading a heating and cooling system can be one of the most effective ways to cut energy bills and reduce exposure to rising utility costs.

If you're weighing a heating upgrade, Palmetto's Comfort Plan network can help you find efficient heating and cooling solutions for your home and connect you with vetted installers, making it easier to explore heat pumps and other HVAC options that can slash your energy bills.

Hive data indicates homeowner interest in heat pumps was up 87% in 2025 versus 2024, while installations funded through the government's Boiler Upgrade Scheme doubled year over year.

Save $10,000 on solar panels without even sharing your phone number

Want to go solar but not sure who to trust? EnergySage has your back with free and transparent quotes from fully vetted providers in your area.

To get started, just answer a few questions about your home — no phone number required. Within a day or two, EnergySage will email you the best options for your needs, and their expert advisers can help you compare quotes and pick a winner.

Solar panels can save you more than $50k over their 25-year lifespan, and EnergySage can help you save as much as $10k on installation. Which begs the question — isn't that worth an email or two?

Through technology acquired in its DivideBuy and Rvvup deals, the bank can plug lending into a merchant's checkout by API, provide an instant decision, and support loans ranging from £250 (~$339 USD) to £30,000 (~$40,775 USD).

Customers begin with a soft credit check that doesn't affect their credit score. Before a loan is finalized, Zopa completes a hard credit check and full affordability assessment, and the borrowing is reported to credit bureaus, meaning on-time payments can help build credit history.

These loans differ from the more lightly regulated payment deferrals many shoppers became familiar with before the July 2026 changes.

What can be done?

If you're considering a heat pump, it may be worth comparing the total cost of financing against the future savings on your heating bills. The numbers can look especially favorable if you are replacing oil or LPG heating, improving insulation, or using a tariff built for heat pumps.

If you're not ready to spend upfront, Palmetto's Comfort Plans include $0-down options that can lower your heating and cooling costs by up to 50%, plus 12 years of free maintenance. That can give you another path to efficient HVAC upgrades without absorbing a major upfront hit.

You can also pair solar panels with electric appliances, including efficient HVAC systems, to bring your utility costs even lower. EnergySage makes it easy to find the best solar system and installer for your home and budget, with potential savings of up to $10,000 on installations.

UK policymakers have said their priority is the "middle market" — households that do not qualify for means-tested grants but still cannot comfortably pay five-figure upfront costs from savings.
