A new round of federal funding is headed to Webb County, Texas, with more than $32.4 million set aside for programs that touch the daily lives of families, older adults, and people moving through the court system.
Here's what to know
At an Aug. 14, 2026, announcement at the Laredo Public Library, Webb County officials said more than $32.4 million in federal funding is coming for Head Start, treatment courts, and Meals on Wheels, KGNS reported.
According to the station, officials said some of the money will go toward power and other utility bills for families, as well as meal service for seniors, extending the package beyond education and court-related programs.
The station also said the new funding adds to federal dollars directed to key local infrastructure.
More background
Each part of the funding is aimed at a different challenge.
Head Start programs are designed to support early childhood education and family services.
Treatment courts typically provide specialized supervision and services for eligible participants, often with the goal of improving outcomes and reducing repeat involvement in the justice system. Funding in this area can help local courts strengthen programs intended to respond more directly to underlying issues.
What's being done?
At the local level, the funding provides community leaders and service providers with greater capacity to maintain and expand programs that residents already rely on.
Head Start providers can continue serving children and families, while senior meal programs can continue reaching older adults with limited mobility or fixed incomes.
The utility assistance portion is another form of support that can have an immediate effect.
Treatment court funding can also help local systems offer more structured alternatives and support services, which may improve stability for participants and reduce pressure on the broader court system over time.
