Texas Panhandle drivers are seeing higher pump prices, with Amarillo-area gas prices edging up to an average of $3.90 per gallon.

The increase adds to a broader cost burden for local consumers.

Here's what to know

MyHighPlains, citing GasBuddy, reported that Amarillo-area gasoline prices climbed 2.5 cents per gallon to an average of $3.90. That put prices 12.4 cents below the monthly comparison, but still $1.43 higher in the annual comparison.

Across Amarillo, drivers saw prices as low as $3.66 and as high as $4.09 per gallon, a 43-cent difference depending on the station.

Even after the increase, Amarillo stayed below the unchanged national average of $4.24 per gallon.

Patrick De Haan, head of petroleum analysis at GasBuddy, said the national trend has been mixed. "Average gasoline prices fell in a majority of states over the last week, though a fresh spike in the Great Lakes driven by a regional refinery issue nearly offset the broader decline, with that situation now beginning to clear up," De Haan said.

More background

Amarillo drivers saw less price relief than the country overall. Nationally, average gas prices were down 22.3 cents in the monthly comparison, while Amarillo's average fell just 12.4 cents.

Amarillo's average was $1.43 higher year over year, compared with a national increase of $1.24. That puts the local jump 19 cents per gallon above the national one.

A 15-gallon fill-up at Amarillo's average costs about $21.45 more than the national average. Diesel nationally averaged about $6.34 per gallon after a 4-cent increase.

The citywide average can mask sizable differences between stations. Two drivers buying the same amount of gas in the same city could still pay several dollars apart, even before the next price shift.

Across Texas, prices ranged from $2.99 to $5.65 per gallon statewide, a $2.66 gap.

"Diesel edged modestly higher nationally, and with the national average for gasoline likely to remain above $4 per gallon and diesel above $6 heading into the U.S. election, the relief motorists and policymakers have been hoping for remains elusive," De Haan added.
