Tesla posts 486,532 Q3 deliveries, tops forecasts, but stays shy of last year's mark

Despite a rocky 2025 and 2026 for sales, the automaker is still king in the U.S. when it comes to EV sales.

For car shoppers watching EV prices, availability, and charging support, Tesla's latest delivery report sent a mixed signal.

While deliveries beat forecasts, they still have not climbed back above Q3 2025's tax-credit-fueled peak.

Here's what to know

As Not a Tesla App detailed, Tesla delivered 486,532 vehicles in the third quarter of 2026. That put the company slightly ahead of its prior-quarter total and ahead of analyst expectations.

The consensus forecast going into the quarter was 461,974 deliveries, based on projections from 24 financial institutions. Tesla finished 24,558 vehicles above that estimate, which the outlet said amounted to a 5.3% beat.

Even with that upside surprise, Tesla remained 2.1% below the 497,099 vehicles it delivered in Q3 2025, its recent peak. Compared with Q2 2026's 480,126, though, deliveries improved by 1.3%.

The vehicle mix changed as well. With Tesla winding down the Model S and Model X, the "Other models" category got smaller. Not a Tesla App said those vehicles probably were not part of Q3 2026's numbers because their delivery event took place in May.

Tesla reported producing 464,391 vehicles and deploying 13.7 gigawatt-hours of energy storage. That storage figure was higher than in both comparison quarters, but it still came in 2.2 gigawatt-hours below forecasts, the outlet said.

More background

The comparison to Q3 2025 comes with an important caveat. That quarter set a record after buyers rushed to buy before the U.S. federal EV credit cutoff, so 2026's decline isn't as simple as a straight read on demand.

Now that Model S and Model X are being phased down, the "Other models" bucket likely leans more on the Cybertruck and Tesla Semi, per Not a Tesla App.

What can be done?

Not a Tesla App said Tesla has started volume production of the Semi and is expected to build 50,000 a year. Growth in that category and in emerging ones like the Robotaxi could provide a meaningful boost to the brand.

Tesla's next scheduled milestone is its full third-quarter earnings release after market close on October 21, followed by a webcast at 5:30 p.m. Eastern. The outlet also mentioned there is an event showcasing the Roadster on October 15 after the initial October 1 date was called off due to weather.

For drivers comparing options beyond Tesla, EVs can still be a practical way to cut fuel and maintenance costs.

Despite a rocky 2025 and 2026 for sales, the automaker is still king in the U.S. when it comes to EV sales. It's been on a bit of an upswing, defying analysts' expectations in the last few quarters.

Where can I learn more?

Tesla's stronger-than-expected quarter comes amid a mix of good and bad overseas news.

• In Europe, Volkswagen's all-electric SUV rapidly outsold the Tesla Model Y.

• In Australia, BYD's Sealion 7 pushed Tesla into second place in EV sales.

• In China, a new promotional campaign gave Tesla a needed boost.

• Across Europe, Tesla's removal of purchase options narrowed access to the Model S.
