Tesla owner drove 1,857 miles in 31 days, says charging cost $136 and saved $235 on gas

The creator said the starting point is having a place to charge at home.

For drivers wondering whether an electric vehicle can meaningfully cut monthly costs, one Tesla owner said charging data made the comparison fairly clear.

According to the owner, 1,857 miles of driving over 31 days cost $136 in home electricity, while a gas-powered car covering the same distance would have cost nearly double.

Here's what to know

A content creator who posts as FrunkToTrunk (@frunktotrunk) broke down their monthly costs in a TikTok video, using data from the Tesla app.

@frunktotrunk Charging your Tesla for 31 days cost $136, saving you over $200 compared to gas! With 7x fewer moving parts, maintenance is a breeze. #TeslaFacts #EVLife #ElectricCar #CarSavings #SustainableDriving ♬ original sound - FrunkToTrunk

Over that 31-day stretch, the app logged 1,857 miles — roughly 59 per day — and a total charging cost of $136. Using that same mileage, the app estimated that a gas car would have needed $235 more in fuel.

The creator also said there was a one-time home-charging expense. They paid $585 for a Tesla Wall Connector and $450 to connect it to the breaker box.

FrunkToTrunk said that level of driving was above average, citing AAA figures mentioned in the video that put typical U.S. driving at about 30 to 35 miles per day. That means the example reflects relatively heavy use rather than occasional short trips.

More background

Rather than focus on the purchase price alone, the creator framed the discussion around day-to-day ownership costs. In the video, FrunkToTrunk asked, "So can you afford a Tesla?" and pointed to monthly savings as a way to offset the one-time cost of installing a home charger.

They also presented maintenance as a potential advantage. The owner said Tesla's drivetrain has far fewer moving parts than a gas car, and while the video didn't offer a repair-cost breakdown, they said that could also lower operating costs.

On range, the creator said they usually start with around 240 miles available, which they contrasted with the roughly 30 to 35 miles of daily driving most people need. They added that charging to 100% for longer trips would provide even more range.

The other consideration was insurance, which FrunkToTrunk didn't mention. Many commenters pointed to it, though experiences varied on whether it was a significant increase over a gas-powered vehicle.

What can be done?

The creator said the starting point is having a place to charge at home, then figuring out the cost of the equipment and installation.

In this case, that involved a $585 Wall Connector and a $450 hookup to the breaker box. Because the creator said their app showed more than $200 in monthly gas savings, they argued those upfront costs could be recouped "within just a few months."

They also relied on Tesla's in-app tracking tools, which compare electricity costs with regional gas prices. In the creator's example, that side-by-side view put daily driving costs at a little over $4 per day, based on $136 across 31 days.

"I drive 100 a day, you'll think I'll be saving," one commenter asked.

"You'll be saving a ton," FrunkToTrunk replied.

Where can I learn more?

For a closer look at how EV charging costs stack up against gas, Tesla owners and other drivers compared electricity bills, per-mile costs, home charging, and overall ownership expenses.

• One Tesla owner said major savings with EV driving made daily commuting far cheaper than gas.

• In the Bay Area, one driver found 7.9 times less per mile even without solar or home charging.

• A Tesla owner said charging at home kept fill-up costs surprisingly low with a Wall Connector.

• Across the auto market, drivers saw surprising cost differences between owning EVs and gas cars.
