Construction has commenced on a Rivian charging station on Houston's Southwest Freeway. The project will expand EV charging capacity along a vital corridor.
Here's what to know
Community Impact reported the development based on a filing with the Texas Department of Licensing and Regulation. According to the filing, Rivian began work on the electric vehicle charging station June 16 with a completion target of mid-June 2027. The project's estimated cost was $330,000.
Known primarily for its electric SUVs and trucks, Rivian also has been building out a network of EV charging stations.
More background
Founded in 2009, Rivian builds its electric vehicles in the United States and sells them directly to both individual and commercial buyers rather than through independent dealerships, as many other automakers do.
According to Community Impact, Rivian has recently expanded its commercial partnerships, supplying electric delivery vans to Amazon and 10,000 autonomous robotaxis to Uber.
Expanding charging infrastructure
As electric vehicles have become more prevalent, drivers thinking of making the leap from gas to battery have been concerned about the ability to quickly and easily recharge EVs. The more that charging infrastructure expands, the more those concerns diminish.
New charging stations in key locations have helped to make EVs a practical consideration for a growing number of drivers. In turn, more EVs on the road means less local air pollution and lower fuel and maintenance costs for drivers.
In 2024, following a similar move by Tesla, Rivian announced that it would make its charging stations available to drivers of other EVs, ESG Dive reported.
"Using a new charger design to accommodate any compatible EV in North America, these sites are an important milestone in support of electrifying the entire transportation sector," Rivian stated in a news release at the time.
The charging stations are part of the Rivian Adventure Network, which the company website describes as "a growing network of fast-charging sites, capable of adding up to 150 miles of range in 20 minutes."
According to the company, the "Rivian Adventure Network is planned to grow to more than 3,500 fast chargers at over 600 sites across the U.S. and Canada."
