These mobile billboards transform public streets into yet another advertising platform.

A San Jose resident's photo of a truck covered in giant animated digital ads has sparked frustration online. Many argue that these mobile billboards are yet another way advertising is intruding on everyday life.

The post, shared on Reddit's r/SanJose community, shows a truck with a massive digital display covering its entire side, playing animated advertisements as it drives through the city.

"I hoped I'd never see these in SJ," the original poster wrote. "'I'm sorry officer, the giant animated screen was so distracting that I ran into it!!'"

The sarcastic comment about crashing into the truck highlights genuine safety concerns about moving advertisements designed to catch drivers' attention when they should be focused on the road. These mobile billboards transform public streets into yet another advertising platform, forcing everyone who shares the road to become an audience β€” whether they like it or not.

The constant bombardment of advertising β€” from digital billboards on floating barges to ads on fortune cookie wrappers β€” contributes to what researchers call "advertising saturation."

This relentless exposure creates visual clutter in our day-to-day environments and actively encourages overconsumption by constantly suggesting people need more products. Every ad for unnecessary purchases chips away at efforts to live more sustainably and mindfully and drives up demand for pollution-generating manufacturing.

Add to that the environmental cost of powering large LED screens and manufacturing purpose-built ad vehicles, and the impact goes well beyond irritation. It's another example of how commercial clutter can worsen people's experience in their communities while also increasing energy use and pollution.

Commenters shared similar frustrations.

"I saw this on tha freeway tha other nite, i was on tha opposite side of tha freeway. Mos def a distraction," one wrote

A second commenter added, "I'm surprised it's not advertising some AI, CRM, or ERP stuff."

Another offered practical advice: "Contact the companies that advertise on them and express your distaste for them. It's the most effective weapon."
