A Florida couple preparing for Medicare enrollment says a meeting with a local agent left them feeling pressured instead of informed.
At the center of the dispute was Medicare Plan G-HD, a Medigap option the couple wanted to discuss ahead of a January 1, 2027, start date and an agent who, according to the couple, seemed focused on steering them toward something else.
Here's what to know
In a Reddit thread, the original poster said they and their wife are planning for Medicare coverage to begin January 1, 2027, and met with an agent in Collier County, Florida, to get started.
According to the poster, the conversation left out the option they were most interested in: the agent "only presented Plan G as a Medigap option" and "never brought up Plan G-HD."
The poster said that once they mentioned leaning toward the high-deductible version, "he got very uncomfortable and brought up scare tactics."
The complaint was not unique in the thread.
"The first two agents I talked with also refused to discuss HDG, both saying the exact same words. 'You don't want that.' That's all they'd say," one commenter wrote.
More background
Several replies focused on whether an agent is tied to one insurer or able to shop across the market.
"Look for an INDEPENDENT Medicare broker that represents many different insurance companies that do business in your area," one commenter advised.
Other users said shoppers may not need a go-between at all when comparing Medicare options.
"You really can do this yourself," one commenter wrote.
What can be done?
Several commenters suggested using the Medicare Plan Finder on Medicare.gov as a starting point before talking to anyone selling coverage.
Users also recommended speaking with more than one broker and treating the search the way you would any professional service.
One commenter wrote, "Meet with more than one agent," and said time in the business and local experience can matter when it comes to rates and service.
Another option raised in the thread was to contact a State Health Insurance Assistance Program counselor, or SHIP, for help reviewing plan categories and comparisons. One commenter who identified themselves as a SHIP counselor said counselors in their state talk through plan choices and provide a rate sheet, but consumers still need to contact the plan directly to enroll.
