LiveWire's stock plunged over 40% after the electric motorcycle maker warned of serious uncertainty about whether it can remain in operation. The financial trouble threatened a crucial launch for the brand born out of Harley-Davidson, as the company was preparing to release a line of e-motorcycles that cost less than $5,000.

Here's what to know

The announcement came as LiveWire appeared to be turning the corner financially. Third-quarter sales revenue reached $7.9 million, up 38%, alongside a 21% gain in the number of motorcycles sold, according to Electrek. Despite the gains, however, LiveWire recorded a quarterly net loss of $18.6 million.

The company's cash reserves also fell sharply, dropping from a year-end 2025 balance of $82.8 million to $39.9 million on Sept. 30. Additionally, Electrek reported that LiveWire canceled its annual financial outlook, which had put its expected 2026 operating loss between $70 million and $80 million.

More background

Despite receiving rave reviews, LiveWire's high-priced electric motorcycles have served a relatively small market. The upcoming S4 Honcho series was intended to draw in a broader audience with simpler-to-operate vehicles and more affordable prices.

Starting at under $5,000, the lineup would be LiveWire's most affordable yet, according to Electrek. Riders who could not justify the price of other motorcycles could be drawn to these smaller, lighter bikes, which represented a substantial shift for the premium brand.

To make the new models easier to operate for non-motorcycle riders, they did not feature a clutch or shifting gears. Alongside the lower cost, that simpler riding experience was intended to make the motorcycles more approachable for new riders.

What's being done?

LiveWire has formed a restructuring committee to explore possible next steps for the company, including a potential sale in the absence of additional funding. The timing of the affordable models' arrival — and whether sales will be enough to stabilize the business — remain open questions.
