In Jackson County, Florida, leaders are assembling a countywide push against child poverty that targets the expenses and obstacles weighing most heavily on families, according to WMBB.

Through the Jackson County Prosperity Initiative, they intend to cut child poverty in half by tackling pressures linked to food, healthcare, education, jobs, housing, and childcare.

Here's what to know

The initiative has singled out several underlying issues, including high childcare costs, housing, healthcare, education, food insecurity, and unemployment.

The effort is drawing in organizations, businesses, agencies, and community leaders from around Jackson County.

Among the participants are Jackson Hospital and local banks, institutions that witness firsthand how those hardships affect residents, per WMBB.

More background

The Jackson County Prosperity Initiative is framing poverty as a web of connected problems, from food access and employment to childcare and housing.

Unaffordable childcare can limit a parent's ability to work, while housing or healthcare costs can compete with grocery budgets and school-related expenses, WMBB reported.

With Jackson Hospital, local banks, and other community groups involved, the effort includes organizations that regularly work with families facing these pressures.

What's being done?

The clearest action is coalition-building.

The Jackson County Prosperity Initiative is gathering representatives from local organizations, businesses, agencies, and community leadership to work on the causes it has identified.

Residents looking to plug into the effort are being directed, according to WMBB, to Nikisha Milsapp at the Jackson County Chamber of Commerce.

That makes the chamber the initiative's starting place for families and other community members who want information or help getting started.

"Jackson County is home to lots of people and those people, we want to live here. We want to come back here," Milsapp said, per WMBB. "We want them to grow their families here, and providing resources for those families that are struggling and that need additional help — we want to be that person, that point of contact that's providing that information to them."
