After Hurricane Isaias, storm-damaged homeowners in Florida's Panhandle have a new in-person option for handling insurance claims: a walk-in hub in Destin with at least six carriers and state consumer-help staff available.
Here's what to know
On Oct. 11, Florida Chief Financial Officer Blaise Ingoglia launched an Insurance Assistance Hub in Destin to help residents dealing with Hurricane Isaias-related damage, according to WJHG.
The first day ran from 1 to 4 p.m. at the Morgan Sports Center in Destin, run by Destin Parks and Recreation.
Residents visiting the site could speak with representatives from at least six insurers, while staff from the Florida Department of Financial Services' Division of Consumer Services were also there to answer questions and assist with claims.
Officials said additional insurers were scheduled to be at the same location on Oct. 12 from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m., and the hub is expected to stay open.
For homeowners, the setup provides a place to review claim details face to face with insurers and consumer-services staff instead of handling the process entirely remotely.
More background
Rather than leaving residents to coordinate each part of the process separately after a hurricane, the Destin hub puts insurers and state consumer-services specialists together in one local venue.
For people dealing with roof, water, or other property damage from Isaias, claim speed can affect both when repair costs are covered and when work on a home can start.
Involving the Florida Department of Financial Services' Division of Consumer Services means residents can get support beyond their insurer.
That gives people a chance to ask carrier-specific questions while also getting guidance on the claims process.
Where can I learn more?
For Florida homeowners dealing with hurricane damage, the Destin hub is one part of a bigger insurance picture shaped by storms, shrinking coverage, and disputed claims, as this coverage examines.
• After back-to-back hurricanes, homeowners described an insurance nightmare when damage claims were denied.
• In Texas, insurers exited the state after severe storms drove up losses.
• After Hurricane Idalia, Florida residents turned to the Red Cross and Feeding America for help.
