GM makes room for hybrids in its EV-first strategy, with new models planned as early as 2027

The move would mark a shift after years of largely prioritizing fully electric vehicles.

A hybrid lineup is on General Motors' agenda, with new nameplates planned as early as 2027.

The move would mark a shift after years of largely prioritizing fully electric vehicles.

Here's what to know

GMC's Acadia, Buick's Enclave, and Chevrolet's Traverse are built at Lansing Delta Township Assembly in Michigan, where GM is preparing for future hybrid production, according to Autoblog.

GM has not identified which models will get its first gas-electric powertrains. The three SUVs share a foundation in the company's C1 platform, potentially simplifying the addition of hybrid technology across those models.

The Chevrolet Corvette is GM's lone U.S. hybrid nameplate. Ford and Toyota, by contrast, have been expanding their hybrid offerings.

More background

Conventional hybrids accounted for a 16% share of U.S. new light-duty vehicle sales in the third quarter of 2026, compared to 6% for fully electric vehicles, according to U.S. Energy Information Administration data cited by Autoblog.

Despite strong truck sales, GM's overall sales fell 5.5% during that quarter, with weaker EV sales and the removal of models accounting for much of the drop.

However, the announcement does not mean hybrid versions of the Traverse, Enclave, or Acadia will arrive at dealerships in 2027.

What's being done?

Changes to an earlier Domestic Manufacturing Conversion Grant award are intended to help launch the expanded hybrid lineup. GM's investment in hybrid production falls within a wider Lansing-area investment program with spending projected above $2 billion across multiple years, according to Autoblog.

The next-generation Cadillac CT5 is among the future vehicles Lansing Grand River Assembly is being prepared to build. The investment commitment also covers that plant.

Lansing Grand River could experience reduced output or a stretch of inactivity while awaiting the CT5, which Autoblog reported is not expected until 2028.

GM has announced a manufacturing investment, but it has not yet named the hybrid models consumers can buy.

The Michigan factory built over 291,000 vehicles in 2025, a production record, according to Autoblog.
