Europe's diesel shock makes electric trucks up to $113,000 cheaper in major markets

Another jump in diesel prices is squeezing Europe's freight sector, and a new analysis indicates electric trucks are becoming not just a climate play but a stronger financial one as well.

In several of the European Union's biggest truck markets, the numbers are already moving in favor of battery-powered rigs.

Here's what to know

According to a newly released T&E report, electric trucks beat diesel models on total cost of ownership in six of the nine major EU markets it examined. Those six countries make up 46% of new heavy-truck sales across the bloc, as the group wrote in a press release.

A five-year comparison shows some of the biggest gains in the Netherlands and Germany, where fleets could save up to €100,000 (~$113,430 USD) and €85,000 (~$ 96,415 USD), respectively, by going electric. In both markets, the higher upfront cost could be recovered in about two years. T&E said the advantage grows even larger when diesel stays expensive.

The analysis also pointed to rising pressure on European manufacturers. Electric trucks from Chinese and U.S. companies are coming in with far lower purchase prices.

Stef Cornelis, director of freight and fleets at T&E, described the urgency.

"Europe's truckers are on the front line of the diesel crisis," he declared in the release. "There has never been a better time to switch from diesel to electric, but we need truckmakers and governments to support them in doing so."

More background

Freight companies often operate on tight margins, leaving them particularly vulnerable to swings in fuel prices. When diesel costs spike, those increases can quickly ripple through supply chains, raise delivery expenses, and ultimately push up consumer prices.

Total cost of ownership can matter more than the sticker price alone. While electric trucks can still cost more upfront, lower fuel and operating expenses can make them cheaper over time.

T&E's projections suggest the economics could tilt even further toward electric trucks. It said that by 2030, they may be cheaper to operate in all nine countries studied, even if purchase subsidies are scaled back or phased out, so long as current policies remain in place along with a limited set of added measures.

That would mark a major turning point for Europe's freight sector.

What's being done?

Policy decisions will play a major role in determining how quickly truck fleets can make the switch.

One key recommendation is preserving the EU's existing heavy-duty vehicle carbon dioxide target of cutting pollution by 43% by 2030.

T&E also urged Italy, France, Spain, and Poland to fully implement the Eurovignette Directive and waive road tolls entirely for zero-pollution trucks through 2031, followed by a 50% to 75% exemption afterward.

The group also said governments should continue supporting both public charging and private depot charging while speeding up grid upgrades and permitting. Without enough charging access and power connections, lower operating costs alone may not be enough to accelerate adoption.

Cornelis also summed up the stakes for both policymakers and manufacturers.

"Maintaining the CO2 standards will be critical for Europe's truck industry to compete with Chinese e-trucks and the Tesla Semi and avoid a repeat of what we saw in the auto industry," he concluded in the release.
