Airbnb guest paid $300 pet fee, then host sought more 2 weeks later over 'stained' towels

"It's clear they took these photos prior to washing the items, because they're in the rooms I left them in."

A Reddit user who used Airbnb for a trip with a toddler and two large dogs later received a request from the host for $90.47 — even though they had paid a $300 nonrefundable pet fee.

Here's what to know

The disgruntled Airbnb guest relayed the experience on the subreddit r/mildlyinfuriating.

In the post, the user explained why they used the platform and shared screenshots of the "damaged" and "stained" bath towels, duvet covers, washcloths, and hand towel.

"I tried to argue that the fee should cover these stains," they added. "Also, it's clear they took these photos prior to washing the items, because they're in the rooms I left them in when I went out of my way to gather the laundry in each room."

One commenter shared a similar experience.

"Someone tried to do this to me, and I straight up told Airbnb that it felt scammy. Plus, they didn't request reimbursement until after another guest had stayed there, but they were trying to charge me for cleaning," they wrote. "Almost every review on my profile says I left their place clean lol. Airbnb denied the request and closed it."

The original poster said: "Yes!!! I replied to the host and declined because this was legitimately two weeks after check out."

More background

The discussion included complaints about surprise fees and what guests should reasonably expect from a rental service.

Doubt about the host's accusation surfaced as well.

"It says you stained all six bath towels?? I would be demanding a picture for each damn one cuz ain't no way," a commenter stated.

Users said the photos didn't show much.

"Were these items irreparably stained? I can't see anything on these tiny photos or on the dark washcloth," a user observed.

Some people used the incident to air broader grievances against Airbnb.

One commenter said they had stopped using the service because it is "terrible for the communities they're in" and because hosts give guests "a laundry list of chores."

Another wondered whether the pet fee had also come with "a hefty cleaning fee on top."

What can be done?

Commenters advised disputing the charge through Airbnb, and the guest said they declined the request and told the host that extra payment wasn't warranted.

Users also suggested pushing for better evidence.

After reviewing the host's photos, they questioned whether the stains were serious enough to justify reimbursement, especially if the items hadn't been washed yet.
