UK homeowner fears corner-cutting as solar installer goes quiet after 50% deposit

"I would be more worried you got scammed than backing out."

One rooftop solar installer's plan to work without scaffolding has left a UK homeowner reconsidering the project.

And since the resident paid a 50% deposit, the installer has been "incredibly unresponsive," leading them to ask Reddit's r/SolarUK forum for advice.

Here's what to know

In the Reddit thread, the original poster explained that a family friend's recommendation led them to the installer for their 15-panel system facing east and west.

OP wrote, "When I asked about scaffolding, he said he didn't need any. … I'm now worried that if he is cutting corners on safety, what else is he cutting corners on?"

The poster then added, "Please can anyone put my mind at ease or let me know what I can do? I'm concerned it's too late to back out now, as he has likely begun ordering hardware in preparation for the works."

Commenters overwhelmingly urged the OP to back out. One wrote, "He can return hardware. I'd be backing out pronto. 50% deposit is hefty too. Most companies ask for 10%."

Another commenter with a similar point explained that "if it is an MCS accredited company, they are not allowed to charge more than a 25% deposit. Any installer fitting panels and not using scaffold either has little or no experience. This could end up costing you thousands in the long run if they cause leaks etc. with a bad install."

One user added, "I would be more worried you got scammed than backing out. 100% back out of the install and get a real installer to do this work."
