UK resident seeks blackout protection for family with 'absolutely no emergency plans'

"A standalone battery with a few solar panels will actually go a long way for refrigeration."

One U.K. resident concerned about possible blackouts turned to Reddit for help finding an affordable backup power supply.

But the problem went beyond choosing a battery. The original poster explained that their family had no emergency plan and little interest in preparing.

Here's what to know

Refurbished equipment was among the options the resident was willing to consider in their search for a reliable, affordable power supply, as outlined in the Reddit thread on the site's r/Batteries forum.

The OP wrote, "I'm hearing frightening news about the UK government preparing us for disruptions such as war or climate related incidents. If something were to happen now, our family has absolutely no emergency plans."

They then added, "I'm trying to find a good quality reputable power supply that's affordable to someone who is unable to work right now… don't know where to start."

Commenters advised the OP to choose equipment based on their household's essential electricity needs, naming EcoFlow, Bluetti, and Jackery as reliable options.

The top comment read, "I have an Ecoflow Delta Pro 1,300 watts. [But] none of the reliable brands are going to be cheap and the best thing to do is wait until there is a sale."

Another wrote, "After storing excess drinking water, dry and canned foods, the major concern will be refrigerated and frozen foods… a standalone battery with a few solar panels will actually go a long way for refrigeration."

With energy prices through the roof, there's never been a better time to go solar — and EasyHome can help you find the best prices from the best installers in your area.

EasyHome takes the guesswork and headaches out of energy upgrades by showing you estimated savings from a network of vetted local partners. To get started, just enter your ZIP and share a few details about your home — seeing your estimate is really that easy.

For homeowners considering installed storage rather than a portable power station, EnergySage offers a way to explore home battery storage options, including competitive installation estimates. EnergySage has teamed up with electrification brand Qmerit to help homeowners get the best price on home battery storage solutions.

Battery storage can also help people save money on energy and provide greater energy independence when paired with solar charging or lower-cost electricity.

Another commenter recommended using stored energy during expensive periods, and replenishing the battery with solar power or electricity bought at lower rates. Potential savings, however, will depend on the household's electricity use, tariffs, and equipment costs.

Another company offering strong battery backup options is Pila. Pila's plug-and-play batteries cost a fraction of a whole-home backup system, which matters for the poster's affordability concerns. And Pila's batteries can protect individual appliances, like refrigerators.

Where can I learn more?

Other households shopping for backup power have also had to balance cost with what they'll need during an outage.

• Another U.K. homeowner bought solar and storage, then learned blackout backup costs extra.

• A U.K. home worker considering Anker Solix S2000 heard backup mattered more than savings.

• A U.K. homeowner's £6,999 battery quote drew criticism over £3,000 in installation costs.
