A California homeowner seeking feedback on a solar-and-battery quote received a warning that a prepaid lease could allow the lessor to drain the battery, sell the electricity, and keep the proceeds.

Here's what to know

A single Tesla Powerwall 3 would provide storage for the proposed system alongside 20 Enphase IQ8X microinverters and 20 Pure-RX-DC panels, according to the Orange County homeowner's post on Reddit.

For billing, the homeowner said they were on NEM 3.0 with Southern California Edison.

Before what the homeowner described as a lease "discount," the price was $40,425. The prepaid-lease quote brought that figure to $26,276.23.

"Curious to get people's thoughts, feedbacks, opinions, etc., on the pricing, pros and cons of the various systems being offered here," they wrote.

One commenter flagged that the risk was the lessor's control over battery exports and resulting revenue. They could therefore decide when to send the battery's electricity to the grid and keep the money from those exports.

The latter package carried a quoted net price of $32,783, about $6,507 more than the Tesla configuration.

Commenters added a warranty comparison, citing 15 years for Franklin, Enphase, and Qcells units versus 10 years for a Powerwall.

The Powerwall 3's inverter was also considered as the connection point for the panels. In that design, the homeowner would forgo the individual microinverters.

What can be done?

The homeowner had sought proposals from several installers. This one covered a prepaid arrangement but did not establish what another payment structure would cost.

EasyHome can also help homeowners explore backup battery storage options alongside solar installation choices. Pairing solar with a battery lets homeowners maximize savings and power their homes with solar when the grid goes down, so storage capabilities and control terms are worth comparing alongside quoted prices.
