Some Florida homeowners can receive up to $10,000 to protect their homes from hurricanes through the Hallandale Beach Community Redevelopment Agency.

But starting construction before receiving formal approval could leave homeowners responsible for the entire bill.

Here's what to know

The HBCRA noted that its 2026-2027 applications are now open for storm-shutter and impact-glass assistance. Eligible homeowners who live in the property can use the funding for storm shutters or impact-resistant doors and windows.

And according to the city government, "the last day to apply for any of the programs… is June 30, 2027," although it noted that funding is doled out on a first-come, first-served basis.

To be considered eligible, homeowners (and not trailer park owners) must have a household income of less than or equal to 80% of the Broward County median income. Additionally, the residents must live within the community redevelopment agency's district.

Citing federal Department of Housing and Urban Development figures, Cuba Headlines listed Broward County's 2026 median income as $102,500.

More background

Homeowners must cover any project costs beyond the $10,000 benefit. HBCRA sends its payment to the selected contractor, not the homeowner. And only contractors with agency approval and current licensing and insurance qualify, according to Cuba Headlines.

Walk-ins are not being accepted for this shutter assistance. Instead, to apply, homeowners must make an appointment at the agency's office at 400 South Federal Highway, Room 239, according to Cuba Headlines.

An approved contractor's quote and photographs of the existing windows must accompany the application, along with income documentation and photo identification. Applicants must also provide the property's deed, a Broward County property tax receipt, and a recent electric bill proving occupancy. Applicants must also submit a non-refundable $75 fee by check or money order made out to Hallandale Beach CRA.

Residents 60 and older may qualify for up to another $7,000 if they last participated more than seven years earlier.
