In Madison County, Montana, a woman suffered serious injuries when a cow moose charged while she was out for a routine walk with her dogs near home.

Here's what to know

NBC Montana reported that the woman was treated at a local medical center.

Game wardens searched the area after the encounter but couldn't find the moose.

According to Montana Fish, Wildlife, and Parks, the moose's behavior was likely defensive, suggesting it reacted because it felt threatened rather than attacking without provocation.

Female moose, like the one involved in this case, can become highly defensive, and officials urged people to use extra caution near creeks and in brushy areas, which can reduce visibility and increase the chances of suddenly surprising an animal.

More background

Wild animals can respond defensively when people or pets get too close.

As lands continue to be developed near green spaces and climate shifts impact animals' access to food, water, and shelter, experts have observed a rise in concerning human-wildlife encounters.

What can be done?

Fish, Wildlife, and Parks said people should pay attention to where they go, go out in groups when they can, and make noise so animals know they are there.

The agency also emphasized staying well back from moose and other large animals and keeping dogs under control.

If a moose starts charging or chasing, FWP says people should get behind something solid, such as a tree. The agency also said bear spray may help in some moose encounters.

Where can I learn more?

These stories about other moose encounters show how quickly an everyday walk or trip to the park can turn dangerous, especially when dogs are involved:

• In Colorado, a moose charged at leashed pets after injuring a dog walker.

• In another Colorado case, wildlife officers issued a warning after three moose attacks.

• In Alaska, a moose trampled a woman and injured her dog in a popular park.
