Skoda is giving some drivers a new perk with free car accessories they can download and 3D-print at home.

Here's what to know

According to Motor1, Skoda is offering a growing library of free 3D-printable accessories, including cupholders, storage boxes, cable organizers, coin boxes, phone brackets, and hooks, that owners can download from Printables.com and 3D-print at home to add everyday usefulness to the cabin without a dealer visit.

The initiative came from Skoda's innovation incubator and carries forward the Czech Volkswagen Group brand's longtime "Simply Clever" philosophy, which centers on small features that make daily driving easier.

Because many designs fit storage areas already built into the vehicle, owners can use them without modifying the car, adding convenience at home for a low price.

Skoda said the range isn't limited to newer vehicles, with accessories available for current and discontinued models, as well as dedicated pieces for its Epiq and Peaq electric SUVs.

More background

According to Skoda, using printable files cuts out the usual tooling, inventory, and production lead times involved in making official accessories.

Compared with buying conventional add-ons, this could be a simpler, cheaper way to manage cables, coins, phones, or bottles moving around the cabin. The lineup includes seat-back pocket hooks, USB cable hooks, bottle-cap hooks, and other inserts designed to reduce clutter.

Skoda said the downloadable approach also allows more customization than a standard off-the-shelf accessory, since users can adjust the files to match their own needs.

What's being done?

The company says it is the first automaker to offer this type of perk. Drivers can choose what they like and start printing.

For Peaq EV owners in particular, Motor1 says the model-specific lineup includes a cupholder that attaches to the folding table and fits both regular and larger cups.

Skoda said it will be using customer feedback to decide what to develop next. So far, the most popular accessory is a top tether hook.
