On a property in Idaho, a young moose was ensnared in wire fencing, requiring an officer to free the animal.

Footage of the wildlife rescue was shared by the Latah County Sheriff's Department on Instagram.

Here's what to know

The event began when a property owner contacted Latah County authorities about a juvenile moose becoming tangled in their fencing, Whiskey Riff reported.

Deputy Frantz found the animal and started cutting away the wire with what appeared to be pruning shears. The moose thrashed and grunted in distress, and then it stopped its struggle and allowed the deputy to keep working.

Frantz could be heard trying to steady the moose. He said: "OK, buddy. … There you go. Hold on. Don't tangle me up in it."

Working with the cutters, Frantz kept talking in an even tone as he freed the moose. "Hold on," he said. "A couple more clips."

After most of the fence had been cut away, the moose got back up and ran off. "The moose was cut loose and sent on his way, safe, sound, and full of apples," the sheriff's department wrote.

One commenter joked, "I want some of my tax money to go for a better set of wire snips," while others made similar points and said actual wire cutters would have worked better.

For communities where wildlife regularly crosses private land, having the right equipment could make this kind of encounter safer for both an animal and the first responder.

The footage illustrates how wildlife can run into hazards once land is divided and developed. And more broadly, human activity can shape when and how animals come into conflict with people, especially when barriers or other features of human spaces interrupt normal movement.

In this case, the danger was not the moose itself but the setting humans had created around it.
