In Florida, a 30-inch mower ends the stop-and-clear routine in thick St. Augustine yard

A Central Florida homeowner said thick St. Augustine grass had made mowing with a Toro Recycler 22 a stop-and-start chore because of repeated clogs.

That changed after moving to an EGO mower, as they relayed in an effusive testimonial on the r/egopowerplus subreddit.

Here's what to know

On Reddit, the poster said a few months with an EGO mower had ended years of trouble with a Toro Recycler 22.

Describing the lawn, the homeowner called it a "thick St. Augustine yard here in Central Florida" and added: "Now I've had this bad boy for a few months and have not had a single clog."

Unsurprisingly, they referred to the new equipment as a game-changer in the title. They also said the "wider deck" let them get through the yard faster.

A reply identified the mower as the "residential 30-inch model." Asked separately whether the self-propel speed felt jerky, the original poster replied, "I have not noticed that myself."

More background

Describing the old Toro, the poster noted that "virtually every mow, without fail, I would be forced to stop several times due to clogging."

Some replies turned into a comparison of drive systems.

"I really like the infinite speed adjustment of a hydrostatic drive, but I'm getting sick of being a lawn mower mechanic," one user wrote.

"Adjustable self-propel will never feel more natural than Toro's personal pace," another argued.

Not everyone liked the control response. A commenter who said they use EGO mowers as a landscaper complained about "the long delay and sometimes lack of response to the button press," while another said the lag made them think about the timing at the start of every row.

While the Florida homeowner emphasized the end of clogging, much of the discussion centered on handling and walking pace.

What can be done?

After several months of use, the poster said switching to a wider deck ended the repeated stops for clogs and shortened the mowing job. Users also shared practical tips.

"You can adjust the speed of the self-propel with the twisty knob in the top middle of the handle, find a speed that's natural for you," a user offered.

Another said the mower was light enough that they often skipped self-propel altogether. The thread didn't include a dollar estimate, but commenters pointed to time saved and fewer maintenance frustrations.

After months with the mower, the homeowner's conclusion was clear: "It was a splurge, but has turned out to be well worth the investment!"

Where can I learn more?

If you're wondering how a battery mower holds up in thick grass, many other homeowners have made the switch to electric. They describe cutting power, noise, and day-to-day convenience.

• Across many yards, electric mowers cut thick grass with less noise and upkeep.

• One homeowner who started out skeptical found the switch to electric easier than expected.

• Another homeowner said all-electric lawn care left them pretty happy with the results.

• After swapping from gas, one homeowner discovered you can mow at night without bothering neighbors.

• A Kobalt owner found a battery mower replaced the gas machine for routine yard work.
