In north Houston, deputies removed 45 Chihuahua-mix dogs from a mobile home after saying the animals were being kept in squalid conditions.

Rescuers found many of them sick, suffering from infections, and missing much of their hair.

Here's what to know

According to KRIV-TV, the seizure took place at a home on Edgeworth Street in the Eastex-Jensen area. Deputies from the Harris County Precinct 1 Animal Cruelty Unit and the Houston SPCA recovered the dogs.

Constable Alan Rosen said most of the dogs were dealing with infections and other medical issues, with many showing "little to no hair" and "exposed, pink skin."

"The conditions were terrible," Rosen recalled. "The odor was overwhelming."

"No dog should have to live like that," he added. "This is one of the largest dog seizures that we have seen in a home."

Four chickens and a pig were also taken from the property.

More background

One dog needed emergency treatment at the scene because its condition was so severe. Officials have not said whether they have identified any suspects yet, and the cruelty case remains under investigation.

Investigators are documenting the home's condition, the animals' health, and any evidence that could support possible charges.

What's being done?

The rescued dogs are now with the Houston SPCA, which is overseeing their care and veterinary treatment.

When the investigation is complete, detectives plan to present the evidence to prosecutors so they can decide whether to file charges.

People can report suspected animal cruelty to the Houston SPCA's hotline at 713-869-7722, KRIV-TV noted.
