An entire upcoming season of a Swedish reality competition series produced by Mastiff for TV4 was reportedly deleted just weeks before its scheduled Nov. 22 premiere, forcing producers to start the edit over, according to Futurism.
Initial accounts focused on a possible AI connection, but the broadcaster said the core problem was a failed backup along with human error, not an autonomous system acting on its own.
Here's what to know
Citing Aftonbladet, Futurism identified the affected show as The Challenge Sverige, which Mastiff produced for TV4.
TV4 confirmed that the new season was set to premiere on Nov. 22 before a "technical breakdown" pushed its release back.
Sources cited by Aftonbladet claimed Mastiff had allowed an AI agent to access its server before the files disappeared, and the lost files reportedly could not be restored.
If that account is correct, the production lost about a year's worth of completed work, although the original footage survived.
TV4 program director Mia Lindqvist disputed the suggestion that this was caused by an "AI agent that acted independently."
"On the other hand, most production companies use AI in their work processes these days, but that's a completely different matter," Lindqvist added, per Futurism.
More background
Rebuilding the season could involve hundreds of people repeating their efforts after roughly a year's worth of completed work was wiped out.
Because raw footage still exists, the setback is centered on the finished season rather than the source material itself. The damage came from losing the completed work and from a backup system that did not preserve it.
"The raw material exists, so there is no problem, but of course it means that we lose time," Lindqvist clarified.
AI can help support the energy grid by forecasting demand, balancing electricity use, and optimizing clean energy systems, but training and running large AI models also requires vast amounts of electricity and water.
The same tools that can improve efficiency can also raise costs, strain infrastructure, create security risks, and lead to expensive mistakes when companies use them without strong safeguards.
What's being done?
According to Lindqvist, Mastiff has to assemble the season again from the remaining raw footage, and TV4 delayed the premiere beyond its original Nov. 22 date because of the "technical breakdown."
TV4 publicly framed the incident as a breakdown in the production and recovery process, regardless of whether AI tools played any role somewhere along the way.
In Lindqvist's account, the deletion was ultimately a matter of "human factor" and "not AI."
"Is it true?! I knew AI would be the death of me, this is just the beginning," host Ahmed Behran told Aftonbladet after hearing the story.
