In the UK, homeowner pays for combi boiler install, then finds it plugged into an extension reel

Upgrading aging hot water equipment can lower household energy bills, which helps explain why one U.K. homeowner wanted a straightforward replacement after a leak in a loft tank prompted an overhaul of an old boiler system.

Instead, they came home to find their new combi boiler powered by a cord dangling into their own extension reel.

Here's what to know

In a Reddit post in r/DIYUK, the homeowner said they switched to a combi after a loft tank leak exposed problems with the older setup. They said the home had an aging system boiler, hot water cylinder, and tanks, and suspected a faulty immersion cutoff may have forced hot water back up into the loft tank.

What they found after the install, they said, was a boiler being powered by a loose cord plugged into their own extension reel.

The installer said, "The boiler is on a plug top as the switched fused spur was wired through the programmer upstairs; this is not to building regulations standard so we have made the socket safe and added a plug — we would recommend getting a NICEIC registered electrician out to look at options and resolve this issue."

That explanation was challenged by users who pointed to the manufacturer's instructions.

One user cited the boiler manual itself: "The Vogue Max Combi boiler comes pre-fitted with 1.8m of mains cable. This must be connected to a permanent live supply and NOT switched by thermostats/programmers."

Others argued the real dispute was less about whether the boiler could function and more about what the installer had agreed to include.

More background

From there, the thread shifted to a common renovation problem: the gap between homeowner expectations and the exact scope of a contractor's quote.

One user said, "Ultimately the resolution is what was agreed to and wording in the quotation."

Some Redditors defended the installer, saying legacy wiring problems may not become obvious until the older programmer, cylinder, and tank controls are actually being removed.

Another user argued, "The installer would have no idea that someone has wired it this way until it's all being taken apart."

In a follow-up reply, the homeowner said they were withholding payment until the issue was resolved.

One user regretted the move away from a tanked system altogether. They said they would have preferred a tank so they could have a heat pump.

What can be done?

Much of the practical advice centered on clarifying the electrical side of a tank-to-combi conversion in writing before work starts, especially responsibility for the permanent supply, controls, and any changes to an airing-cupboard spur.

Another point raised in the discussion was whether the installer had surveyed the setup ahead of time and whether a NICEIC-registered electrician was ever part of the plan if the old wiring proved noncompliant.

For homeowners replacing aging hot water equipment after a tank failure like the loft leak in this thread, Cala offers smart heat pump water heaters as an alternative to another gas setup. Cala's customizable smart heat pump water heaters can help homeowners decrease their energy bills by heating water exactly when it is needed.

For households already comparing options after removing a hot water cylinder and tanks, Cala's convenience and money-saving make it an option worth reviewing.

A split in expectations showed up again in the closing exchange.

One user said, "Many heating engineers are not comfortable or competent with electrics. You should probably be grateful he told you to get an electrician to do it."
