New Rivian R2 gets towed within a week of delivery as one controller knocks out key vehicle systems

The video indicates Rivian's response included hardware replacement as well as a validation drive after the work was finished.

A Rivian R2 owner documented an early breakdown, explaining that the electric SUV was towed away five days after delivery. They later showed the service paperwork from the repair.

Next up for them was deciding how to proceed with a planned road trip that would take them hundreds of miles from home.

Here's what to know

In the YouTube video, content creator The Duke of Middleville (@thedukeofmiddleville) said the problem started on Sept. 28, when his R2 lost several functions at once, including its screens, low-beam headlights, and power steering.

He said Rivian instructed him to have the vehicle towed to a service center, where it remained for more than a week.

The paperwork showed that Rivian technicians found an "internal fault in East Zonal Control Module." He said the repair was not limited to software, with Rivian also replacing the East right-hand ECU and an under-hood harness cowl.

"I'm sure some of you may be still concerned, like, 'What happened within five days?'" The Duke said.

More background

To explain why one failure could affect so much at once, the owner pointed to Rivian diagrams of the R2's newer electrical design. He said the vehicle is split into three main zones — East, West, and South — rather than relying on the larger number of control units used in earlier designs.

Fewer wires and fewer modules can allow for easier packaging, lower production costs, and potentially more streamlined servicing. He said the design cuts harness length by about 60%, lowers connections by 40%, and reduces costs by 40% versus earlier Rivian architectures.

That kind of layout also means a single bad controller can interrupt systems that do not seem connected. The owner said the combination of lighting faults, steering-related behavior, and screen issues made more sense once he understood how much the East controller handles.

What's being done?

Rivian's response included hardware replacement as well as a validation drive after the work was finished, according to The Duke. He added that the service center asked permission to put about 25 test miles on the R2, then added 21, moving it from roughly 177 miles to 198 miles total.

He said the repair took 10.15 hours and required the Bluetooth Low Energy digital keys and key fob to be paired again, though his other vehicle settings remained intact.

"Everything's been working great since then," he said.

The creator also praised Rivian's support system, including communication during the repair and mobile service for smaller jobs at home. He said past visits across four Rivians had remained consistently strong, including at-home tire rotation and recall work. That made his decision on the road trip easier.

"So, yes, we are going to take the Rivian R2 on a road trip," The Duke said.

"I feel confident this is going to be fine," he concluded.

Commenters praised the company's handling of the situation.

"The way Rivian responds is what makes me want my R2 just as much as the day we took a demo drive," one said.

"I've been waiting for this video," another YouTube commenter. "Went ahead and pulled the trigger on my order so I guess wasn't too concerned and this validated my comfort."
