In Britain, £9,000 heat pump grants face cuts as gas prices surge again

If support shrinks and fewer people can afford to switch, more families could stay tied to a vulnerable system.

A possible budget decision could slow Britain's heat pump rollout. Ministers are reportedly weighing cuts to grants of up to £9,000 (~$11,853 USD) for household installations and considering redirecting that money toward defense.

Here's what to know

As the Morning Star reported, households can currently get help through the Boiler Upgrade Scheme, which reduces the upfront cost of replacing a gas boiler with a heat pump.

Ministers are considering reducing or ending that support, even as gas prices in the U.K. move back toward levels last seen in December 2022, after the year's energy crisis. Environmental advocates say the proposal would be a step backward for both families and the country's energy resilience.

"Making Britain more dependent on the oil and gas imports fuelling armed conflicts across the globe will only undermine our national security," Greenpeace UK head of climate Mel Evans told the Morning Star. "Support for heat pumps is growing a vital industry with a long-term future."

To that end, upgrading heating and cooling is one of the best ways to save money on utility bills and protect against rising energy prices. Palmetto can help homeowners understand their HVAC options. More background

As gas gets more expensive, households that want to move away from it may still need support to handle the upfront cost of switching. With energy costs still prone to swings, heating upgrades remain especially significant for many households.

The Morning Star reported that installations linked to the scheme rose 56% in 2024 and then increased another 7%, suggesting the policy may have helped the market expand rather than support only a niche product.

Britain still depends heavily on gas boilers, leaving households exposed. If support shrinks and fewer people can afford to switch, more families could stay tied to a vulnerable system.

Save $10,000 on solar panels without even sharing your phone number

Want to go solar but not sure who to trust? EnergySage has your back with free and transparent quotes from fully vetted providers in your area.

To get started, just answer a few questions about your home — no phone number required. Within a day or two, EnergySage will email you the best options for your needs, and their expert advisers can help you compare quotes and pick a winner.

Solar panels can save you more than $50k over their 25-year lifespan, and EnergySage can help you save as much as $10k on installation. Which begs the question — isn't that worth an email or two?

"That risks households being unable to switch from gas boilers, meaning the UK is even more subject to the volatile global gas markets that have caused repeated bill crises," Jess Ralston, energy analyst at the Energy and Climate Intelligence Unit, argued to the paper.

What can be done?

Homeowners already planning to replace a boiler may want to review the current Boiler Upgrade Scheme terms if they're considering a heat pump. During budget reviews, subsidy levels can change quickly.

"Savings for the defence investment plan are a small part of [the department's] overall budget, which saw a significant uplift at the spending review," The Department for Energy Security and Net Zero told Morning Star. "We will set out how we will fund essential investment in our national security this autumn."

If upfront cost is your main obstacle, Palmetto's Comfort Plan includes $0-down options that can cut heating and cooling costs by up to 50%. Palmetto Comfort Plans also include 12 years of free maintenance, making newer, more efficient equipment feel more manageable.

Homeowners can also pair solar panels with electric appliances, including efficient HVAC systems, to drive utility costs even lower. EnergySage makes it easy to compare solar options and find the best solar system and installer for a home and budget, and it can help homeowners save up to $10,000 on solar installations.

Where can I learn more?

Separate from this story, Britain and Europe are working to cut heating costs and rely less on gas.

• Across the U.K., millions could get free home upgrades aimed at cutting energy bills.

• At one of Parliament's biggest buildings, geothermal heat already works against future gas crises.

• Across most EU countries, heat pumps are cheaper than gas boilers, the IEA says.

• Across Europe, heat pumps and rooftop solar could help households blunt future price shocks.
