Goodwill employees in Chattanooga spent several days hearing cries and whimpers from somewhere deep inside their donation center before anyone could locate the source.

The noises came from a trapped dog wedged in a drainage pipe beneath the building. Thankfully, city crews broke through the surrounding concrete, and animal officers pulled the dog to safety.

Here's what to know

Because the dog fell into a drainage pipe, employees at the Goodwill Donation Center on Dodds Avenue could hear him long before they could reach him, according to Local 3 News.

The rescue became possible on October 6, when Chattanooga's Public Works Department removed concrete around the pipe, opening the way for McKamey Animal Center's Animal Protection Officers to finish the job.

Images of the rescue have since been shared with Local 3 News and on Facebook by the McKamey Animal Center. The pictures show the dog with severely matted fur, covered in dirt and debris, and some visible but thankfully minor wounds.

McKamey Animal Center later said in a Facebook update that the dog has been named Georgie and is now in the care of its veterinary team. The shelter said veterinarians are still evaluating his injuries and overall condition after what it described as a traumatic experience.

The shelter added, "We hope to reunite Georgie with his owners, so please share his photo, and if you recognize him, please let us know." McKamey then publicly thanked both Goodwill of the Greater Chattanooga Area and the city's Public Works agency for their help.
