A stunning video shared by Channel NewsAsia (@channelnewsasia) on TikTok captured a large section of road in Kunming, China, collapsing on Oct. 11, with 15 vehicles and multiple trees tumbling into the ground.

Here's what to know

A Channel NewsAsia post says three vehicles were traveling on the roadway when the surface broke apart. The dramatic video shows one parked car slowly falling into the crater as the road crumbles underneath it. In all, 15 vehicles were involved in the Kunming collapse, and fortunately, no casualties were reported. The end of the video even shows a tree crashing into the pit, with nearby buildings sitting on the edge of the hole.

The Channel NewsAsia post did not identify the cause of the Kunming collapse or describe any official repair timeline, investigation, or closure plan. However, the vehicles appear submerged at the bottom of the hole, which may have eroded the roadbed.

The footage underscores the value of early warnings, road monitoring, and quick closures, as well as the importance of road maintenance, which may have prevented this incident. With three vehicles already moving across the road when it collapsed, the incident highlights how little time drivers may have to respond when a surface suddenly fails.
